Volume 2, Issue 5

The last issue of "Beyond Success" listed four suggestions for changing an adrenaline pattern of living. This issue, as promised, focuses on the fourth suggestion ("Strengthen your personal foundation") as a way of shifting out of the adrenaline rush and into a productive and healthful energy pattern.

Building A Strong Foundation For Success

by Trish Pratt

Often people say their life is too busy. Between family, work, maintaining a home, etc., they feel they have too many commitments, too much stress and too little time to relax. Building a strong personal foundation is about addressing these issues.

A focus on strenghening your personal foundation looks at how you manage your life on a day-to-day basis. The specifics for this come from you - from your personal perspective on your life. It requires looking at both the areas of your life that feel good to you and more importantly, at the areas that do not feel good. One way to strengthen this system is to look closely at what is draining your energy, including spiritual, emotional and physical energy. This list may include unresolved issues, things that get in your way, or relationships that aren't supporting you. As you handle these aspects of your life you strengthen your focus, clarity, boundaries and standards. Benefits that often come with this work include more space in your life, improved health, more energy, more clarity and a feeling of being in more control of your life. Does that sound good to you?

Consider the following exercises as a way to begin this process.

Exercise 1 - What Doesn't Feel Good?

Print out this newsletter and in the following space, make a list of the things you are tolerating in your life. This list can include big or small items, business or personal, etc. What are you putting up with?

1. ____________________________   2. ____________________________
3. ____________________________   4. ____________________________
5. ____________________________   6. ____________________________
7. ____________________________   8. ____________________________
9. ____________________________   10. ___________________________
11. ___________________________   12. ___________________________
13. ___________________________   14. ___________________________
15. ___________________________   16. ___________________________
17. ___________________________   18. ___________________________
19. ___________________________   20. ___________________________

If you were to commit to handling three of these items, which items would those be? Commit to handling at least one of them this week. (or two or three...)

Exercise 2 - Mend Broken Fences

Consider the unresolved issues in your life. Maybe there is an issue with a friend or family member that has been left unresolved, leaving hurt feelings or a splintered relationship. Maybe there is an unresolved issue where someone has fallen short in the integrity area. Do you need to forgive someone or maybe yourself? Remember, we are only human. Sometimes unresolved issues need to be let go of. Not every issue can be resolved and not every relationship supports you in who you are. But consider the ones that, if resolved, could be adding to your happiness.

  1. What unresolved issues are there in your life? (This question might take some mulling over.)
  2. Which one would you like to have resolved right now? What would it take to resolve it?

The Best For Last

A less obvious, but even more important, benefit of strengthening your personal foundation is that as you create more space, time and energy for yourself, you begin to attract the life you want. Whether that's about more business, wealth, time for relaxation, etc., with a stronger foundation you open up your life to possibility - "to living in the flow." Life becomes less of a struggle. Happiness comes more easily.

Building a strong personal foundation doesn't happen overnight but then it's quite possible that you have already begun this process for yourself. Whether you feel you have a good start to this work, or are ready to take the first step, consider committing some regular focus to creating a strong personal foundation that will support you in having the life you want.

Start today, right where you are (that's what the munchkins advised) and envision a life with more space, energy, satisfaction and success.

Wishing you success and fulfillment,
- Trish
