Envisioning Your Dreams - For Business and Life

by Trish Pratt

You say you know what you want, but can you describe it? --Your successful business, your perfect job, the life of your dreams... What would it look like? What would it feel like? For you as well as others involved? Writing a description of the picture -- a vision of what you want, is a great way to create and anchor this "success picture" in your mind. A written vision is something you can have in-hand to add clarity during times of decision-making and to help you remember what it is you want and how much you want it, as well as for the successful times when you want to celebrate being "on-track."

Often the best way to begin creating a vision is to simply ask yourself what it is that you really want. What are the necessary details -- the key ingredients that make up your dream? How will it feel when you have exactly what you want? How will having this integrate with or support the rest of your life? How will relationships with family, friends, employees, co-workers, clients, etc. be supported or nurtured in this picture? Set your sights on what would most please you and build your vision around it.

And as to how you know when this picture is unrealistic? Ask yourself if it is possible. Be honest with yourself. Visions are not pipe dreams. If you were envisioning yourself as six feet tall and at the age of forty you are five feet and two inches, you need to confront the impossibility of changing your height, at least without surgical procedure. (You may want to envision yourself feeling six feet tall, but that's not what we're talking about here.) On the other hand, often what we fear most is the dream that IS possible -- that somewhere deep inside us, the dream we know COULD become a reality.

Your Written Vision: A Roadmap to Success

1) A vision helps you get clear on where you're headed. This is usually the first step towards taking responsibility for your dreams. With the responsibility of deciding where you want to go will eventually come the satisfaction of getting there.
2) A vision helps streamline the decision-making process by giving you a context to reference. Once you know your desired destination, deciding which roads to take becomes a much easier process. Every decision is clearer and more on-track because it has a reference point.
3) A vision helps you focus. Helps you to keep your eyes on the road as opposed to stopping at every roadside attraction (distraction). This is important if you want to reach your destination in a timely and direct manner with the least amount of effort.
4) A vision anchors your dream (rather than your fears). Keeps you looking down the road, confident of where you are going -- knowing that this road leads to exactly the place you want to go.
5) A vision helps others to support you. Sharing your vision with your co-workers, employees, family, or support network, (and so the universe) is a way of declaring your intentions to have your dreams. This allows others to support you in getting there.

The next step is simply to begin writing. Allow yourself to see the words of this vision written on paper. Then once you have it written down, you can tweak it to your perfection.

So, let yourself dream. And then embrace that dream with a pen and paper.
